Congress is calling for a state of emergency in New Jersey after getting mysterious reports about drones in the sky. Local resident first reported the sighting in November, causing alarm among government officials. Now, New Jersey’s Republican state senator Jon Bramnick is calling for a temporary ban on all drones.
“The State of New Jersey should issue a limited state of emergency banning all drones until the public receives an explanation regarding these multiple sightings,” Bramnick said in a statement on Tuesday, 6 ABC reported.
Governor Phil Murphy says ‘no known threat to the public’
On Wednesday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy participated in a briefing call with US homeland security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and other officials. According to The Guardian, Murphy said there is “no known threat to the public at this time.” FBI officials Robert Wheeler, who also attended a hearing on the issue, added that there is still no explanation for the mystery.
“Are we concerned there are nefarious intentions that could cause either an actual security or public safety incident? There’s nothing that is known that would lead me to say that, but we just don’t know. And that’s the concerning part of it,” Wheeler said, per The Guardian.
According to 6 ABC, the mysterious drones were also seen within the Philadelphia region. Eyewitnesses said the drones they saw are bigger than the typical ones used by everyday people.
What Joe Biden has said about the matter
In a statement, the White House said President Joe Biden has been briefed on the matter while officials are “closely tracking the activity” of the situation and “coordinating closely” with federal officials to investigate the mystery.
“This is something that DHS and FBI are tracking very, very closely,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday, per 6 ABC. “And so, I would have to refer you to, to them directly, but aware, keeping an eye out and looking into the incidents that you just mentioned.”
