Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia Break Down the Dark Bond Between Ciara and Oliver in 56 Days

Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia

The cast of the psychological thriller 56 Days believes that trauma, secrets, and emotional sensitivity fuel the show’s central relationships, and they play characters drawn to one another for reasons as disturbing as they are relatable.

In an exclusive interview with Wayne Ayers of Where Is The Buzz, Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia shared their thoughts on the emotional relationship between their characters, Ciara and Oliver, while Karla Souza and Dorian Missick discussed the complicated relationship between detectives Lee and Karl.

Trauma brings Ciara and Oliver closer.

According to Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia, the relationship between their characters is not solely romantic.

Although they do not reveal any major plot points, Cameron reveals that Ciara is initially attracted to Oliver because of her own issues.

“She begins to empathize, humanize, and understand,” Cameron said. “They actually end up having more in common than she originally thought.”

Jogia, on the other hand, reveals that Oliver is desperate to be seen and accepted.

“He’s always seeking to be seen,” Jogia said. “He’s sort of like an open wound, especially at the very beginning of the show. The idea that someone like her could walk into his life and like him is really appealing to him.”

Throughout the season, their relationship becomes closer and darker.

“They start to see similarities in each other, maybe even the looser morals or darker sides of themselves,” he said.

Imagining a double date with TV’s most chaotic couples

When asked which fictional couple they would want to see Ciara and Oliver go on a double date with, the two actors chose to go along with the show’s dark theme. Jogia chose Veronica and J.D. from the popular film “Heathers” starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. Meanwhile, Ayers threw in Joe and Love from the popular Netflix series “You.”

“That’s the one we’re going to steal,” Jogia joked when she realized they had picked a couple that fit in with the show’s dark theme.

Cameron says a new album is coming this year.

Ciara Wyse (Dove Cameron)

The singer, who released a song specifically for the series and several singles in 2022, has announced to fans she has a full album in store for them in 2026.

“I have been working really hard to get the green light to release this album,” she said. “I’ve had the album finished a number of times in different iterations.”

Secrets are a big part of a detective’s partnership.

Lee Reardon (Karla Souza), Karl Connolly (Dorian Missick)

Souza and Missick say secrets are a large part of almost all relationships in “56 Days,” and it’s certainly a large part of their characters’ relationship. “It’s definitely a fear of being rejected. Not sharing comes from shame, at least for my character,” Souza says of her character’s silence.

Meanwhile, Missick says almost all of the lying in “56 Days” is done out of protection. “When people are lying, besides scammers, it’s usually a protection mechanism. That’s one of those human elements where it’s like, okay, I get it. That’s why they did it. That’s why they chose to go down this path.”

What they love and hate about each other’s characters

The actors also joked a bit about their on-screen partners.

Missick praises Lee’s emotional openness but jokes about her fashion.

“She’s very emotionally bare on the surface,” he said. “But she can’t dress. Her sense of style is a mess.”

Souza says she admires Karl’s honesty but finds his interrogation style annoying.

“He just can’t keep it together when we’re questioning someone,” she said. “He escalates things too quickly, and I just want him to chill out.”

Dream buddy cop crossovers

The actors also shared their dream crossovers for their characters with other iconic detective pairs.

Missick would pair his character with the mismatched duo played by Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy in the 1982 action comedy 48 Hrs.

Souza would pair her character with the duo played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the first season of the crime drama True Detective.

“That kind of dynamic, two opposite people clashing, was just so compelling,” Souza said.

A thriller built on emotional vulnerability

During the two interviews, the actors agreed that the key to the thriller’s tension was the characters’ emotional vulnerability and secrets.

It is true, for instance, that the thriller explores the relationship between Ciara and Oliver, which is built on their trauma, and the relationship between Lee and Karl, which is not perfect.
