A shocking development in the world of hip-hop: popular rapper Lil Durk, long affiliated with the rap collective known as Only The Family (OTF), has been arrested on conspiracy charges in a murder-for-hire. Court documents implicate Durk in a 2022 shooting that targeted Quando Rondo in which Rondo’s cousin Lil Pab was killed. This arrest and the details that make up these allegations sent shockwaves through the hip-hop world as fans and followers continued to piece together what might have driven Durk’s alleged role and how law enforcement cracked the case.
Revenge for King Von’s Death
Indictment: Durk wanted revenge after the death, in 2020, of his close friend and collaborator King Von. Prosecutors said he had put a bounty for an attack on Quando Rondo, whom he indirectly blamed for Von’s death. Financial records indicate that OTF funds were involved in orchestrating the plot; how far would any organization go to avenge their own?
Footages from surveillance cameras, texts, and financial transactions are among some of the most critical evidences for the court. These, prosecutors say, link Durk and his associates with the shooting plot. In total, five members of the OTF have been indicted while one suspect remains unnamed. Those identified include:
- Keith Jones and David Lindsey, alleged shooters
- Asa Houston, who reportedly drove
- Kayon Grant and Deandre Wilson, handled logistics and payment, respectively.
These are the ones that have been indicted. The name of the sixth suspect has been kept under tight wraps, presumably out of security or investigatory concerns.
The Rumor Mill: Was There a Snitch?
There’s a rumor that an OTF member named “Jam” was cooperating and even rocking a wire to gather evidence. It’s not clear what Jam’s legal name is. He was released from prison in 2022 after serving 12 years for attempted murder. He’s name-dropped on King Von’s “Back Again,” where Durk raps “Jammer get out that Jam, I give him fifty, ain’t gotta ask again,” which suggests the serious level of loyalty between the two.
While the streets have said that it was Jam who was the rat, his name does not appear in the indictment. However, the unsubstantiated mention of an informant does raise several eyebrows amongst OTF fans as to just how much trust and loyalty is available within the clique, as prosecutors reportedly continue to remain busy building a case against the Durk and company.
A Sudden Attempt to Flee?
After several high-ranking OTF members were arrested, Durk allegedly booked a string of flights to Dubai, Switzerland, and Italy. Law enforcement picked him up just before he boarded his final flight to Italy, believing the string of international flights was a fleeing attempt.
As this case plays out, things don’t look good for Durk in court. Conviction on charges filed against him and the others could mean serious, long-term effects on his career and the influence OTF has within the industry. There’s little that fans and followers can do except to sit and wait if more may come from this, or if any key players in the case will come forward.
