Diamond Johnson gets national women’s basketball Player of the Week honor

Following a stellar opening week in the women’s college basketball season, Norfolk State All-MEAC guard the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) named Diamond Johnson their Player of the Week.

Through the Spartans’ first three games, Johnson recorded 20.0 points on 45% shooting from the field and 50% from three, 4.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals, leading the team to a 3-0 record.

This includes helping lead Norfolk State to a monumental victory against Missouri, marking the first win in program history against an SEC opponent. She finished with 17 points (including nine in the fourth quarter), four assists, and two steals.

Johnson is in her second season with Norfolk State after stints with Rutgers and North Carolina State.

In 23 games, the former All-ACC selection compiled 20.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 3.8 steals, leading Norfolk State to its second straight MEAC championship.

She was named the MEAC tournament MVP after scoring 20.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 steals.

The Lady Spartans are looking to become the first MEAC team to win three straight conference tournament championships since Hampton claimed five straight from 2010 to 2014.

Norfolk State will have another chance to win over an SEC opponent in its next outing when the Spartans face the University of Alabama on Wednesday.
