Dawson Odums will not be retained as Norfolk State football coach

Add Norfolk State to the list of HBCUs now looking for a new football coach.

Tuesday afternoon, Spartans athletic director Dr. Melody Webb announced that after four seasons, Dawson Odums would not be returning as head coach.

“I want to thank Coach Odums for his continued commitment and dedication to Spartan football,” Webb said in a statement released by the university. “Since his arrival, he has become a valued member of our family and community, always representing Norfolk State with dignity and class. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Odums finished his Norfolk State tenure with a 15-31 overall record and 7-13 in MEAC games.

Odums left Southern University after a successful eight-year run as head coach that included four SWAC West championships and a conference title in 2013. Odums’ first season at Norfolk State was his best, finishing 6-5 overall and 2-3 in conference games.

Norfolk State said that a nationwide search for a new head coach would begin immediately.
