‘Companion’ Film Twist Revealed In New Trailer With Sophie Thatcher And Jack Quaid

The forthcoming horror film Companion has released a follow-up to its teaser trailer, originally unveiled in 2024, and it comes with a chilling twist.

The Warner Bros. film, directed by Drew Hancock, centers on Iris (Sophie Thatcher), a woman seemingly at odds with her boyfriend, Josh, played by Jack Quaid. However, the official full-length trailer reveals a sci-fi twist: Thatcher’s character is actually a robot.

The twist in ‘Companion’

“The silver lining of showing the audience [that] this is a movie about a robot is it’s a way to kind of get ahead of anyone dismissing it as another robot movie,” Hancock told Entertainment Weekly. “Because it’d be so easy to just be like, ‘This is M3GAN,‘ or, ‘This is the Megan Fox movie [Subservience].’ It’s a little different to be like, ‘No, this is a robot movie, but it’s not like any other robot movie that’s out right now.’ It’s not A.I. gone wrong, it’s A.I. gone right.”

In addition to Thatcher and Quaid, Lukas Gage stars as Patrick, and Megan Suri portrays the character Kat. Actors Harvey Guillén and Rupert Friend also appear in the movie.

Despite the new trailer showcasing a major plot reveal, Quaid says audiences will never guess the outcome of the film.

“It was one of the best scripts I’ve ever read,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I never saw any of the twists coming, but it’s not necessarily a movie that relies on a big reveal, and every reveal was fresh.”

When is ‘Companion’ in theaters?

Companion, written and directed by Drew Hancock and produced by Zach Cregger, Raphael Margules, and J.D. Lifshitz, debuts in theaters on Friday, Jan. 31.
