Charithra Chandran explains that her battle against Princess Vivi in the live-action adaptation of One Piece on Netflix has enabled her to portray two sides of a single personality, a rare gift for an actor to explore. In an interview for The Wayne Ayers Podcast, Charithra Chandran explains her experiences playing Vivi as a chance to explore different sides of a single personality as Vivi changes from her undercover identity as Miss Wednesday to her true identity as a princess.

From Miss Wednesday to Princess Vivi: A Two-Fer for the Actor

Charithra Chandran explains that her change from her enigmatic role as Miss Wednesday to her true identity as Princess Vivi has enabled her to explore different emotional dimensions as an actor. “I mean, it almost feels like two for one. Like buy one, get one free. I get to play two different characters with a consistent through line.” The fact that Vivi is able to explore different emotional dimensions has enabled her to examine different emotional states while keeping her motivations consistent.

Life Lessons from a Princess: What Vivi Teaches the Straw Hats

Throughout her time as a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, Vivi has traveled with them as they help her save her kingdom of Alabasta. Charithra Chandran explains that Vivi has a lot to teach the crew of the Straw Hat Pirates. Vivi has taught the crew of the Straw Hat Pirates about diplomacy and responsibility.

“Sometimes you have to put aside your ego in order to achieve your greater goal,” Chandran said. “You can’t always just shoot from the hip.”

She said Vivi encourages the crew to think outside their own circle.

“The Straw Hats are great at helping their friends,” Chandran said. “But Vivi asks a bigger question. Can you help people you don’t even know? It’s about service to a community.”

Nami and Vivi: The Friendship That Lit Up Season 2

She talked about her relationship with co-star Emily Rudd, who plays Nami.

She said her on-screen relationship with Rudd was similar to her real-life friendship with her co-star.

“Emily Rudd is the perfect human,” Chandran said. “She’s a delight and very good at everything. She really took me under her wing.”

Movie Nights, Hikes, and Braais: Inside the Cast’s South Africa Bonding

She said the cast of the series bonded well during their time in South Africa.

“We’d go to the movies most weekends as a big group,” she said. “We’d organize hikes or do a braai, which is the South African word for barbecue.”

She said the cast would have a party whenever a member finishes work.

“If someone had wrapped, we’d do a big dinner or birthday drinks,” Chandran said.

Turning Critics Into Vivi Fans

She said fans have their own opinions about Vivi, especially in comparison with the original anime series of One Piece, which was based on a popular manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda.

“Vivi is living in an environment where she’s very anxious,” Chandran said. “She’s a young woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders.”

Though the criticism may hurt, Chandran hopes the audience will see Vivi’s heart.

“What I really wanted to show was Vivi’s heart and her joy,” she said. “But also the hesitancy to fully let the love from the Straw Hats in.”

The Alabasta Arc Tease: No Spoilers, But Faithfulness to the Manga

Chandran refused to reveal the scenes from the Alabasta Arc that she hopes to film. The scenes are often referred to as the Alabasta Arc. However, she assured the audience that the series has remained loyal to the manga so far.

“We’ve been very faithful to the manga,” she said.

Chandran also joked about the difficulty of including Vivi’s giant duck companion, Karoo, in the espionage scenes.

“Espionage with a giant duck is really hard,” Chandran said.

If Vivi Ate a Devil Fruit…

Chandran revealed her ideas about the kind of power Vivi might have if she ate a Devil Fruit. She thought of something whimsical yet useful.

“I think it would be a Rapunzel-type power,” she said. “She could grow her blue hair and use it as rope.”

Bridgerton Balls and Pirate Adventures: Fans Get Creative

If she could give a member of the Straw Hat crew a spot at a Bridgerton ball, Chandran said that Nami would thrive socially and that “she’d leave with a lot of jewelry.”

“She’d steal everything,” Chandran joked.

Chandran also said that if Eloise from Bridgerton were to join the Straw Hat Pirates, she would be a great addition because of her curiosity and love of adventure.

Who Can Babysit Karoo and Who Absolutely Cannot

When Chandran was asked which member of the Straw Hat crew Vivi would trust to babysit Karoo, Chandran quickly answered that it would be Nami.

However, other characters like Luffy or Usopp would not be a good choice.

“I wouldn’t trust Usopp,” Chandran said jokingly.

The Question She’d Ask Eiichiro Oda

If Chandran had a chance to ask Oda one question about Vivi, it would be if Vivi had ever killed anyone while spying for Baroque Works.

“In my backstory, I always imagined Vivi as the brains and Mr. 9 as the brawn,” Chandran said. “She would come up with the plans but never actually take it as far as killing someone.”

Chandran explained that this question is important because it addresses Vivi’s morality as a character.
