Chappell Roan ignored the negative feedback surrounding her attention-grabbing appearance on the red carpet at the 2026 Grammy Awards. Instead, she chose to address the online hate in a friendly, lighthearted manner while promoting the benefits of individual freedom.

In her Instagram post, Roan said, “Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit. The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will it’s really fun and silly :D.”

Her outfit was a sculpted piece from Mugler that appeared to hang from faux nipple rings, giving the illusion of a topless appearance. However, while some people online called it “disgusting” and “low class,” others praised it as daring and imaginative. People even compared it to Jennifer Lopez’s legendary Versace gown from the 2000 Grammy Awards.

Roan’s attitude was in line with her campy, irreverent image, which has helped her rise so quickly in popular culture. After her breakout in 2024, she entered the 2026 Grammys season with several nominations and a reputation for outrageous fashion that walks a line between costumes, performance, and commentary.

Social media was deeply divided about Roan’s outfit and her comments. One commenter said of Roan, “No one cared about the fake nipple rings; it’s her acting like a spoiled child while presenting a talented young Black woman with an award.” Another commenter said of Roan, “I honestly loved her outfit; that shade of red is gorgeous on her.” A man commented on Roan’s outfit: “It’s not that outrageous because everyone is trying to out whore each other these days.” A woman made this comment about Roan: “I like her idk, she pretends to be woke and a dyke, she’s using such a malicious industry to her benefit. I stan!”

Roan doesn’t seem too interested in toning down either her aesthetic or her attitude as the Grammys controversy continues to ripple through social media.
