Caitlin Clark, a shining star of college basketball, looked uncensored at her rise and the tangled dynamic of race and privilege in the powerful new feature as TIME’s Athlete of the Year. In the feature, Clark recognized how white privilege contributed to her rise to superstardom while making sure to lift uhe impact Black players have had on building the WNBA.
“I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a white person, there is privilege,” Clark shared in the interview. “A lot of those players in the league that have been good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them.”
Clark, an icon of pathbreaking performances and stellar achievements at the University of Iowa, underlined the need to give full recognition to the immense contribution Black athletes have made toward the growth and success of women’s professional basketball.
“The more we can appreciate that, highlight that, talk about that, and then continue to have brands and companies invest in those players that have made this league incredible, I think it’s very important,” she said.
Clark spoke deeply of her sense of responsibility, of wanting to do her part to amplify the voices and careers of Black women within the sport. She made clear that with growing influence, she is committed to elevating Black players, a sentiment that might signal a positive transformation in the sports landscape.
“I have to continue to try to change that. The more we can elevate Black women, that’s going to be a beautiful thing,” Clark stated, signaling her ongoing commitment to equality and empowerment in the sport she loves.
Clark’s words have a particular resonance within the larger context of conversations around racial equity in sport, where Black athletes have long been both trailblazers and victims. By naming her privilege and calling for further investment in Black athletes, Clark stands in solidarity for a fairer future for women’s basketball on and off the court.
