Beyond the Gates, the groundbreaking Black soap opera on CBS, has shocked viewers with its first major death.
Doug McBride (Jason Graham), former surgeon and husband to prestigious real estate mogul Vanessa McBride (Lauren Buglioli), was found dead in a fiery car accident. Of course, there are no accidents on soap operas, and the death was more than likely committed by entrepreneur Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom), who was having an affair with Vanessa as the accident occurred.
As TVLine noted, Vanessa does suspect Joey of being behind her husband’s death, but will his denial of any involvement allay her fears? Who’s to say?
Cast members and fans react to ‘Beyond the Gates’ death
But what is true is that Graham’s departure has affected the cast, who were shown in an Instagram video posted by Buglioli, applauding and crying over Graham leaving the series.
As he told the cast in the video, “I love you all. You guys are family for life.”
One commenter wrote, “It’s a soap, no one is ever REALLY dead. Right?”
Buglioli responded, “Pinning this” in all caps. So maybe, at some point in the future, Doug (or his long-lost twin brother, wink wink) could return to cause havoc? We can only hope.

Series creator and writer Michele Val Jean also hated to see Graham go due to her killing off Doug. She wrote in the comments section, “I’m a horrible person.”
Beyond the Gates airs weekdays at 2/1c on CBS.
