Jeff Baena, a distinguished filmmaker and screenwriter, passed away on January 3, 2025, at the age of 47. He was found deceased at his Los Angeles residence, with reports indicating that he died by suicide.
Born on June 29, 1977, in Miami, Florida, Baena pursued film studies at New York University before relocating to Los Angeles to advance his career in the entertainment industry. He initially worked as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis and later as an assistant editor for David O. Russell, co-writing the 2004 film “I Heart Huckabees” during this period.
Baena’s directorial debut came with the 2014 zombie comedy “Life After Beth,” featuring Aubrey Plaza, whom he began dating in 2011. The couple maintained a private relationship, revealing their marriage in May 2021. They collaborated on several projects, including “Joshy” (2016), “The Little Hours” (2017), and “Spin Me Round” (2022).
Throughout his career, Baena was known for his unique storytelling and contributions to independent cinema. His work was recognized at various film festivals, with “Life After Beth” premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and “The Little Hours” being nominated for the Audience Award at the 2017 Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Baena is survived by his wife, Aubrey Plaza; his mother, Barbara Stern; stepfather, Roger Stern; father, Scott Baena; stepmother, Michele Baena; brother, Brad Baena; stepsister, Bianca Gabay; and stepbrother, Jed Fluxman.
