AOC Raises Alarm Over AI After US Missile Hits Iranian Girls School

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is advocating for a thorough investigation into the March 3rd US missile strike, which reportedly targeted a girls’ school in southern Iran, killing at least 170 kids, and is raising suspicions about the potential involvement of AI in misidentifying the location as a military target.

The strike, which used a Tomahawk missile, was carried out at a time when US-Iran relations were escalating and targeted the port city of Minab. Initial reports suggest the school could have been misidentified as a military target based on outdated intelligence, and this is raising suspicions about the potential role of new military technology in making fatal decisions.

In an interview with Zeteo News, Ocasio-Cortez said Congress hasn’t really done much about the strike, although some people are starting to look into it.

“I think there probably hasn’t been enough of a reaction to it,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “That’s not to say nothing has happened. I do know that there are people in the respective intelligence and Armed Services Committee that have absolutely been opening investigations into this. But ultimately, we need to get to the bottom of what happened.”

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, said she’s particularly interested in knowing if AI technology was used to identify the school as a target.

“I personally am particularly interested and want to know if there was any AI that was involved in identifying, erroneously, the school as a target,” she said. “Because we have been warning for a very long time against the use and integration of this technology precisely for this reason.”

The strike occurs at a time when the US-Iran conflict is escalating. The escalation started on February 28 under President Donald Trump. The escalation also involves Israel’s involvement. The escalation started after Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran.

Ocasio-Cortez also criticized the military campaign, terming it unjustified.

“We know without a doubt that this is a war of choice that Donald Trump has initiated,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “All of these hostilities, killing American service members and innocent Iranians alike, for no reason. He has a different reason every day.”

The Pentagon has not publicly confirmed whether AI was used in targeting the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ elementary school in Minab, Iran. Military officials have also failed to provide detailed findings regarding how the strike was identified and whether intelligence failures contributed to it.
