Amanda Seyfried has built a successful career by choosing roles that align with her vision as an actress. From her breakout performance in Mean Girls to her Academy Award-nominated role in Mank, she has carefully navigated Hollywood with a mix of blockbuster hits and indie gems. However, one role she walked away from has continued to spark curiosity among fans. Seyfried was originally in the running to play Gamora in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, a character that ultimately became a defining role for Zoe Saldaña.
In a recent interview, Seyfried explained why she turned down the opportunity, citing concerns about the film’s success, the intense makeup process, and the extended filming schedule. Looking back, she believes she made the right choice, even though the film went on to become a massive hit.
She Thought Guardians of the Galaxy Would Be Marvel’s First Flop
When Seyfried was first approached about playing Gamora, she hesitated because she was unsure how audiences would respond to the film. At the time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was thriving, but it had primarily focused on well-known superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. A movie about a group of misfit space adventurers, including a talking raccoon and a sentient tree, seemed like a risky gamble.
“I thought that because this was about a talking tree and a talking raccoon that it would be Marvel’s first bomb,” Seyfried admitted. “And that Chris Pratt and I would never work again.”
Her skepticism was not entirely unfounded. Before Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2014, many fans and critics questioned whether a lesser-known Marvel property could capture mainstream audiences. James Gunn was stepping into his first major blockbuster directing role, and the film’s oddball humor and cosmic setting were a departure from the grounded superhero stories that had defined the MCU up until that point.
Despite her doubts, Guardians of the Galaxy defied expectations and became a massive success. The film grossed over $772 million worldwide, launched a trilogy, and made its cast, including Zoe Saldaña, household names. Seyfried later acknowledged that she had underestimated the power of Marvel’s storytelling.
The Grueling Makeup Process Was a Major Deterrent
Another major reason Seyfried turned down the role was the extensive makeup process required to transform into Gamora. The character’s signature green skin meant that Saldaña had to undergo several hours of prosthetic and makeup application each day before even stepping onto set.
“I was really scared of the idea of being stuck and painted a different color every single day for potentially years of my life,” Seyfried said.
Zoe Saldaña later confirmed that playing Gamora was physically demanding due to the makeup and prosthetics. Every morning, she endured hours of makeup application, followed by even more time to have it removed after filming wrapped. While some actors enjoy the transformative process of prosthetics, Seyfried knew that this level of commitment was not something she wanted to take on.
She Did Not Want to Film in London for Six Months
The filming schedule was another deciding factor for Seyfried. Guardians of the Galaxy required a six-month shoot in London, something she was not eager to commit to at that time in her life.
Relocating for half a year to work on a single project was a daunting prospect. Seyfried had already established a career that allowed her to have more control over her work-life balance, and spending an extended period in another country was not something she was willing to do.
She Chose a Different Project Instead
While Marvel was preparing for Guardians of the Galaxy, Seyfried was considering another opportunity that felt more in line with what she wanted to do. She ultimately chose to work on A Million Ways to Die in the West, a comedy directed by Seth MacFarlane.
Though A Million Ways to Die in the West did not achieve the same critical or commercial success as Guardians of the Galaxy, Seyfried has never expressed regret over her decision. She believes that every actor has a different path and that the Marvel franchise ended up in the right hands.
“I also think that Zoe and Chris and everybody who’s a part of that franchise is exactly who they should be,” she said.
No Regrets, Just a Different Path
Looking back, Seyfried remains confident in her choice. While Guardians of the Galaxy became one of Marvel’s biggest hits, she has continued to build a successful and diverse career without being tied to a long-term franchise.
In Hollywood, every actor has stories about the roles they turned down, some of which became iconic. Seyfried’s decision to pass on Gamora may have surprised some fans, but in the end, it allowed her to continue shaping her career on her own terms.
