Alabama A&M ties 29-year-old school record in rout of latest SWAC opponent

The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team made program history Thursday night, extending its winning streak to 11 games with a commanding 82-52 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The streak ties a program record set during the 1996–97 season.

“It always feels good to be a part of something special,” head coach Dawn Thornton told WHNT 19 on Thursday night. “I believe when I was hired back in April, that was something Dr. Bryant, Dr. Wims and I talked about. I’m thankful to be a part of history, but it’s just another win for us — we’ve got to keep pushing.”

The Bulldogs (15–9, 10–1 SWAC) have turned their season around after starting 4–8 in nonconference play. Thornton said early struggles were part of a necessary adjustment period for a team still learning her system.

“For me, it was important to meet the team where they were so we could make some adjustments,” she said. “The way I wanted to play in the preseason, we just weren’t there. When we got into conference play and really went back to the drawing board, it just started clicking.”

Jaida Belton led Alabama A&M with 14 points, while Kalia Walker added 12. Coriah Beck and Moses Davenport each chipped in 11 as the Bulldogs maintained their hold near the top of the SWAC standings.

Alabama A&M will look to set a new program record when it returns home to face Jackson State on Saturday.
