The voice actress for the animated character Hazel in the movie “Fairly OddParents: A New Wish,” cccc, posted a threatening email from a fan who claims he is romantically involved with the animated character she voices.
She posts the email on her Instagram story, where he tells her that the “universe itself” has told him Hazel is his soulmate and warns her she will feel the “universe’s wrath” for breaking his heart.
“God hates you for getting in the way of Hazel’s and my love,” the email reads in part, and demands that Hairston remove all the mentions of this couple she has mentioned publicly or in interviews, and adds, “I suggest you take down all the devzel posts you made… if you want a peaceful life.”
Hairston addressed the issue of receiving such threats in her Instagram Story, noting that she usually does not share them, as it comes with the territory of being a public figure, especially an actor or animator.
“90% of the messages I get are harmless,” she writes, adding, “Mostly fans excited to connect. Some of them think a little differently, and I understand that. I usually just ignore and/or try to lead with grace and patience.”
While referring to her fan as “an extreme case” and “a bad apple, not the norm,” Hairston also said that she is not scared of the threats she receives since she stays “prayed up” and is a black woman in America. She jokingly added, “I’ve handled far worse, deadlifts 190 on the trap bar.”
In her follow-up Instagram Story, Hairston expressed her concerns about the online safety of public figures. “Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple,” she writes, saying that people can create multiple accounts and keep harassing public figures even when they are blocked.
“I have someone who emails me the exact same message from four different addresses. There really needs to be stronger protections in place to prevent.”
Hairston says that she has already blocked and reported the fan and will take additional security measures in the future.
