US authorities have stripped several Iranian nationals, with family connections to the Iranian government, of their legal status as permanent residents of the country, according to a statement released by the US State Department on Saturday.
Specifically, the green cards of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani’s niece, Hamideh Soleimani Afshar, and her daughter were canceled by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The two are now being held by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, after their arrest in Los Angeles on Friday evening. The women are due to be deported from the country.
According to the State Department, Hamideh Soleimani Afshar used social media to spread pro-Iranian propaganda while living legally in the United States. In her Instagram posts, which she now deleted, Afshar was reported to praise attacks on American soldiers and military bases in the region, as well as congratulate Iran on electing its new supreme leader. She also referred to America as the “Great Satan.”
Rubio tweeted about his actions on X. He noted that Soleimani Afshar was an “outspoken supporter of the Iranian regime who celebrated attacks on Americans” and that the Trump administration “will not allow our country to become a home for foreign nationals who support anti-American terrorist regimes.”
In addition, the husband of the Iranian citizen was banned from visiting the United States. The Department of Homeland Security and ICE were thanked for their assistance.
The move comes just days after the government decided to take away the legal status of Fatemeh Ardeshir Larijani, daughter of former Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, as well as her husband, Seyed Kalantar Motamedi. The two are currently not in the US anymore, as they had already been banned from entering the country.
The US targeted Qasem Soleimani with a drone strike at Baghdad International Airport in January 2020, following an order from President Donald Trump. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps is designated a terrorist organization by Washington.
