Halle Bailey And Regé-Jean Page On Throwing ‘Caution To The Wind’ In ‘You, Me & Tuscany’

If you’re in need of escapism and romance, Universal’s new romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany, starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, leans into Black love, chemistry and the kind of sweeping romance that rarely gets centered on the big screen.

An impulsive journey fueled by loss

The film follows Bailey’s Anna, a young woman navigating life after losing her mother and her housesitting gig, leaving her in a state of grief and without a home. When a spontaneous night out leads to a chance encounter with a charming Italian stranger, Anna impulsively follows his unintentional invite to Tuscany, only to find herself an unexpected and unwelcome guest at his massive villa. Her situation becomes even more complicated when she meets Michael (Page), a reserved vineyard owner who shares an unexpected connection to her supposed romantic interest. What begins as a harmless lie quickly spirals, forcing Anna to confront not only the truth but also the possibility that love can emerge in unlikely circumstances.

Sometimes a little delusion is a good thing

“We could all use a little bit of throwing caution to the wind, stepping outside the comfort zone and doing something that makes no sense at all,” producer Will Packer told Blavity’s Shadow and Act when asked about the film’s aspirational tone.

He continued, “I just think that ultimately one of the reasons you go to the movies is for people to do things that seem preposterous and absurd, but for it to all work out because we dream that that could happen for us. And I’m somebody who believes that it could happen for us!”

Director Kat Coiro echoed that sentiment, pointing to Anna’s willingness to embrace uncertainty as the heart of the film. “You have to take a leap of faith… and it worked out for her,” she said.

An undeniable chemistry

While Anna and Michael’s journey is filled with twists, turns and romantic chaos, it’s the chemistry between Bailey and Page that elevates the film.

“I think we both came ready to play,” Page said after hearing Packer describe their dynamic as “magic” during the film’s first table read.

“We knew that we could trust each other and liked each other’s vibe,” he added. “We got to discover the characters through each other.”

Their connection is most evident in the film’s more intimate moments, such as Michael introducing Anna to the art of winemaking, shielding her edges from an unexpected sprinkler downpour, or the pair serenading each other with Mario’s “Let Me Love You.” Page jokingly described the latter as “absolutely terrifying,” given that he was singing alongside his Grammy-nominated co-star.

Finding balance in love

Though not everyone will find themselves falling in love against the backdrop of Tuscany, the characters themselves feel relatable. Anna is impulsive, fiery and determined to carve her own path, even when it leads her into chaos. Michael, on the other hand, is grounded, structured and weighed down by responsibility until Anna’s presence encourages him to soften and embrace vulnerability.

“I felt like I could relate so much to Anna’s character about finding her way, going through her ups and downs and her journey. She’s very impulsive, she’s very smart, very fiery, and is a doer; she’s just gonna do it,” Bailey said. “I could see pieces of myself in her.”

She continued, “I feel like I learned a lot through her as well, like finding your way and feeling worthy and knowing to surround yourself with the people who love you and bring out the best in you.”

Both actors agreed that while their characters begin on very different paths, their connection ultimately helps them rediscover what truly matters.

“Michael’s character really brought Anna back to herself, and she realized that she had a safe place to belong,” Bailey said.

Page shared a similar perspective, adding, “Some people are able to remind you of what you already have.”

You, Me & Tuscany premieres in theaters on April 10.
