Donald Trump abruptly left the room after he went to the Supreme Court on Wednesday to hear oral arguments on birthright citizenship. The president, who was hoping to hear favorable arguments on his effort to take away birthright citizenship, left the courtroom furiously when he didn’t get his wish, CNBC reported.
What happened when Donald Trump attended hearing on birthright citizenship?
Trump made history on Wednesday when he became the first sitting president to attend a Supreme Court hearing. But he didn’t sit in court for long, apparently.
The president attended the hearing with Attorney General Pam Bondi and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, according to PBS News. He stayed in court for an hour listening to a presentation by Solicitor General D. John Sauer, who defended Trump’s effort to take away birthright citizenship. However, Trump left the court shortly after listening to counterarguments from several members of the justices and some lawyers.
After leaving the courtroom, Trump ranted on social media.
“We are the only Country in the World STUPID enough to allow ‘Birthright’ Citizenship!” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.
What is birthright citizenship?
Trump is aiming to take away the right of thousands of babies who are granted citizenship every year when they are born to undocumented parents in the U.S. On the first day of his second term, the president signed an executive order to erase birthright citizenship. The order stated that babies cannot be citizens if their parents came to the U.S. illegally.
Sauer, in his argument against birthright citizenship, said the system “rewards illegal aliens” and violates immigration laws. He also gave baseless statements about birthright citizenship leading to a flock of immigrants from “hostile nations.”
However, three of the justices Trump nominated to the court stood against the president’s order, along with many of their colleagues, PBS News reported. The U.S. is one of about three dozen nations that grant citizenship to children according to where they’re born, according to PBS News.
