A member of the Trump administration has once again attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., based on ungrounded accusations. Several conservative news outlets reported that an autonomous Somalian region took these accusations seriously and called for Omar to be extradited. Now, it’s clear the comments weren’t coming from government officials in Somalia, demonstrating the level of misinformation that has surrounded conservative attacks against the congresswoman.
Vice President JD Vance made unsupported accusations against Omar
Vice President JD Vance recently appeared on conservative political commentator Benny Johnson’s The Benny Show, discussing various conspiracy theories that have been lobbed at Omar, who emigrated from Somalia as a refugee when she was a child, about her immigration status. Without citing any evidence, Vance stated that he and Trump officials like advisor Stephen Miller “actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America” and that they were exploring “legal remedies” and determining “how do you go after her, how do you investigate her, how do you build a case?” Vance also insinuated, again without evidence, that Omar knew about daycare fraud within Somali communities in Minnesota.
After Vance’s interview, several conservative and conservative-leaning news outlets, including Fox News, The New York Post, and Sinclair Broadcast Group, reported that the Somaliland region within Somalia was looking to extradite Omar. Somaliland is a self-declared region within the Horn of Africa nation, not recognized by most countries as an independent territory, and Omar has opposed moves by Somaliland in the past, such as a proposed agreement between the region and neighboring Ethiopia.
The reports that Somaliland looked to extradite Omar were based on a post from the X, formerly Twitter, account @RepOfSomaliland. Reposting a clip about the Johnson interview with Vance, the account wrote, “Deportation? Please you’re just sending the princess back to her kingdom. Extradition? Say the word …”
News outlets falsely attribute social media posts to the Somaliland government
The account has posted or reposted several other items about the interview and about Omar, including an AI-generated video of Omar, alongside Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., exclaiming “Somalia first” — a reference to a comment falsely attributed to Omar by Republicans who questioned her loyalty to the United States — before screaming at being given a “Somaliland” Easter egg by President Donald Trump.
However, the RepOfSomaliland account isn’t an official one of Somaliland’s government. Somaliland’s foreign ministry has previously warned that the “Ministry has begun identifying social media accounts that are NOT official Government of Somaliland channels.” In response to the extradition post, Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told The Guardian, “We kindly advise that any news or statements be referenced solely from official and authorized channels to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information.”
Omar has been a regular target of misinformation and personal attacks by conservatives and members of the Trump administration, including the president himself, who has launched various racist and bigoted attacks against her and the Somali community in Minnesota. Trump has continued to demonize Omar even after she was physically attacked by a man who doused her with a liquid as she spoke at a town hall event. Conservative outlets such as Fox News regularly post negative articles about Omar. Even after it was revealed that the RepOfSomaliland account wasn’t official, Fox kept its story posted, altering the headline and adding a note: “The story has been corrected to note that the RepofSomaliland X account is not a verified government account.”
Omar has described Trump’s focus on her as an “obsession,” and his aides and supporters have mirrored that focus. This latest blunder concerning the comments falsely attributed to the Somaliland government demonstrates the extent to which right-wing politicians and organizations insist on demonizing Omar, regardless of facts.
