Part of my role as 21Ninety’s Editor-at-Large is paying attention to the cultural shifts that are not only happening in real time, but reshaping what the future looks like for Black women. Right now, one of the most exciting shifts is happening in women’s sports.
From sold-out arenas to tunnel fits that rival fashion week, women’s sports are commanding attention in ways we have not seen before. And at the center of that momentum are Black women. As athletes, fans, executives, and storytellers, they are participating in the game as well as redefining it.
That is what inspired Changing the Game, 21Ninety’s new editorial franchise dedicated to exploring the wide world of women’s sports. This series goes beyond the highlight reel. We will work to understand the ecosystem, who holds power, how wealth is being built, and what it means for the next generation of athletes watching it all unfold.
Throughout the series, we will break down how women athletes are building real wealth and explore the rise of a new era of fandom. We will also spotlight the Black women behind the scenes, from agents and executives to decision-makers who are shifting the power structure of sports in real time.
This franchise lives across 21Ninety.com and our social platforms, bringing you closer to the stories, the strategy, and the women who are pushing sports forward.
Changing the Game is about access, equity, visibility, and power. And most importantly, it is about making sure the next generation sees what is possible.
