What Mo Williams said on leaving Jackson State for Kentucky

Jackson State head coach Mo Williams has officially stepped down from his position to become an assistant coach at Kentucky, marking the end of his four-year tenure leading the Tigers.

In a statement released Monday, Williams expressed gratitude to Jackson State Vice President of Athletics Ashley Robinson and the JSU community for the opportunity to lead his hometown program.

“I want to thank Ashley Robinson for giving me the opportunity to come back home and lead the Jackson State men’s basketball program,” Williams said. “To be able to come back to Jackson and lead the hometown team is something I did not take lightly, and I want to thank AD Robinson and the university for believing in me.”

Williams, who played high school basketball in Jackson, added that he and his family will always consider Jackson home and expressed appreciation for the support he received from fans, alumni, and those around the program during his tenure.

“My family and I will always call Jackson home, and I want to thank the fans and alumni for the love and support they showed us over the last four years, and showing why we love Jackson,” Williams said. “To everyone associated with the program over the last four years, know that the work you put in did not go unnoticed and thank you for the buy-in and the hard work over my tenure. I wish nothing but the best to Jackson State as they move forward.”

Robinson praised Williams for his leadership and the impact he made on the Tigers program.

“I want to thank Mo for what he has done for Jackson State men’s basketball,” Robinson said. “His commitment to coming back home and elevating the program to compete at a high level speaks volumes about his character and work ethic. We are grateful for his leadership and impact, and we wish him nothing but success at Kentucky.”

Williams, a Jackson native and former NBA standout, arrived at Jackson State in 2022 after serving as head coach at Alabama State. He compiled a 56-74 overall record and went 47-25 in the SWAC as Tigers coach.
