Nick Cannon Supports Trump While Calling Democrats ‘Party of the KKK,’ Igniting Backlash

Nick Cannon has ignited a firestorm on social media after expressing his support of President Donald Trump and giving an ill-received take in comparing the Democratic Party to the Ku Klux Klan. Cannon shared his political opinions in a conversation with Amber Rose, who openly supports Trump, during an episode of his online talk show, Big Drive.

Nick Cannon argued that Republicans care about people of color more than Democrats

In an episode of his online show, Cannon called the Democratic Party “the party of the KKK,” according to TMZ and as reported by Variety.

Rose said that Democrats “don’t care about people of color and the Republicans do.” To this, Cannon agreed.

“I agree with you 100%. People don’t know that the Democrats are the party of the KKK. People don’t know that the Republicans are the party that freed the slaves. I mean, both of you and I have some conservative views. You’re just a little bit more outspoken than I am,” he said. “And honestly, I don’t subscribe to either party. I rock with W. E. B. Du Bois, when he said there’s no such thing as two parties. It’s just one evil party with two different names.”

Although Cannon said he doesn’t subscribe to either the Republican or the Democratic party, he expressed his support for Trump, whom he said is “cleaning house” and “doing what he said he was gonna do.”

“We got the Gulf of America now,” Cannon added. “He’s like the club. He’s charging a $5 million bottle service fee to get into the country.”

Why did Nick Cannon say the Democratic Party is the party of the KKK?

Cannon most likely referred to the ideology upheld by some factions of the Democratic Party after the Civil War. During the 19th century, Democrats held conservative ideologies and were the ones to secede from northern states. On the other hand, the Republican Party opposed slavery. President and Republican Party leader Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1861, according to Variety.

Throughout the 20th century, the Republican and Democratic parties experienced major shifts, which led to a swap in ideologies. Democrats became increasingly progressive during events like the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. At the same time, Republicans upheld conservative ideology that had been held prior by Democrats. The phenomenon has been widely studied by historians and was reported in detail by Atlanta magazine.

Because of this, Cannon has received backlash and been subject to controversy on social media as people have said his take was irresponsible and ill-informed.

One person wrote on X in part, “I hate when uneducated people dont know politics and history! THE PARTIES SWITCHED! The people who ‘freed the slaves’ are now democrats! So the people you’re calling the ‘KKK’ is actually your own party: The Republicans.”

Someone else said, “There are real living people in 2026 that heard that but aren’t educated enough to know that the ideologies of the democrats and republicans have flipped.”

Another person added, “We all know this. We also know it’s not 1865 anymore and things have changed. Which party has people rocking confederate flags in 2025?”
