Trader Joe’s Recalls 9.8M Pounds Of Frozen Products Linked To Glass Contamination: Is Your Product Impacted?

Trader Joe’s has issued a massive recall on nearly 10 million pounds of frozen food items because they could be contaminated with glass, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Why were the Trader Joe’s frozen items recalled?

Ajinomoto Foods North America Inc. issued the recall in early March for more than 400,000 packages, or about 9.8 million pounds, of Trader Joe’s Vegetable Fried Rice due to “foreign objects” found in the products, the federal agency stated in a notice.

The notice also mentioned that the products were being pulled from shelves due to “glass varying in size from 1-3cm long and 2-4mm wide.”

Trader Joe’s announced in a March 3 news release that the vegetable fried rice packages were among several other recalled food products, which include Chicken Fried Rice, Japanese Style Fried Rice and Chicken Shu Mai.

“We err on the side of caution and are proactive in addressing issues,” Trader Joe’s said in a statement to USA Today. “We voluntarily take action quickly, aggressively investigating potential problems and removing the product from sale if there is any doubt about its safety or quality.”

Details on the recall, several other products and the FDA’s classification

In a March 3 notice, the Food Safety Inspection Service confirmed that carrots were the likely cause of the glass contamination, which has affected the other recalled products.

The recall has expanded to include 16 food items produced between Oct. 21, 2024, and Feb. 26, 2026, under brand names Ajinomoto, Kroger, Ling Ling, Tai Pei and Trader Joe’s, according to the FSIS.

The FDA said in the notice that the recall has been updated to a Class II recall, which is “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the federal agency’s website.
