Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the franchise’s latest series, is coming to an end at Paramount+.
According to Variety, the series, which quickly gained a fandom for its fresh take on the Star Trek universe by following new cadets in the eponymous academy, will end after Season 2.
One silver lining is that Starfleet Academy was already renewed before the first season had even aired. That means the show will be able to deliver a (hopefully) satisfactory wrap-up to its character storylines.
However, even though the series was praised by critics and found a core fan base, it never found a consistent footing with audiences across the board. Variety reports that the series never cracked the Nielsen Top 10 streaming viewership charts. With television series now on shakier ground as networks and streaming services prioritize immediate virality, Starfleet Academy was unfortunately a prime target for cancellation.
Showrunners react to the cancellation
Series showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau wrote a letter thanking the cast, crew and fans for bringing Starfleet Academy to life.
“We’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished together on this show, and the world will get to see the work of these extraordinary artists when season two airs. We will finish strong,” they said in part. “Whether you’re working on Star Trek or part of the marvel that is the Star Trek fandom–its very heart, soul and conscience–the joy comes from adventuring across boundaries of time, space, and the humanly possible in service to [Gene] Roddenberry’s transformative vision of the future. That incomparable vision was fueled by an inexhaustible optimism.”
The two went on to say how Roddenberry witnessed the horrors of humanity as a “decorated Army bomber pilot in the Pacific Theater” and that his vision of a just society “wasn’t just a promise of hope. It was also a warning.” That warning being that humans must put their petty differences and violence aside in order to exist in that hopeful future.
“…With enduring hope that his vision of the future is possible, for our children, their children, and every future cadet in Starfleet Academy,” they continued, “Live Long and Prosper.”
