Norfolk State loses wild WNIT game in final seconds

With less than a second on the clock, Norfolk State’s Da’Brya Clark drained three foul shots to tie what was a back-and-forth WNIT game against Loyola Chicago.

The game seemed destined for overtime.

But chaos erupted on the inbounds.

Officials whistled a foul on Norfolk State. Loyola Chicago made one foul shot to take the lead.

Then came the dagger: A pair of technical fouls were called on the Spartans’ head coach, Jermaine Woods, for arguing the sequence, and he was ejected from the game. Loyola Chicago converted on three additional foul shots to extend the lead.

Norfolk State ended up losing 58-54 in a stunning result.

Woods, the first-year Spartans coach, explained what happened.

“I got the ejection I got intentionally,” Woods explained after the game. I wanted to stick up for my kids and make sure they understand always have their back. “I apologize. The game didn’t go our way, but we represented HBCUs across the country very well today.”
