A popular pastry treat sold at Costco may not be safe to eat. According to a public health alert from the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), La Boulangerie Turkey Pesto & Swiss Cheese Pockets were incorrectly labeled. The ready-to-eat stuffed frozen products may contain ham and cheese instead of turkey pesto and Swiss cheese. The products were sold at Costco locations in the Midwest, 13 WHAM reported.
“The problem was discovered when the establishment notified FSIS that it received two consumer complaints regarding turkey and cheese stuffed pastry boxes containing ham and cheese instead,” the Food Safety and Inspection Service stated.
How can consumers identify the mislabeled La Boulangerie Turkey Pesto & Swiss Cheese Pockets?
The affected products are identified as 25.4-ounce boxes containing eight pieces of “LA BOULANGERIE TURKEY PESTO & SWISS CHEESE POCKETS.” The lot code on the product is labeled as 04926, and the printed date reads “best by” 02/18/27. The products, labeled with establishment number P-51243A, were packaged on Feb. 18.
Two customers have so far reported the issue, according to FSIS.
What is the FSIS’ advice for people who purchased the mislabeled products?
The FSIS advises consumers to contact a health care provider if they experience issues after consuming the mislabeled La Boulangerie Turkey Pesto & Swiss Cheese Pockets.
Consumers can also contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or via email at MPHotline@usda.gov. Additionally, the USDA advises people to report problems through the Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System, which is available 24 hours a day at https://foodcomplaint.fsis.usda.gov/eCCF/.
Although FSIS issued a public health alert, there is no recall for the product because it has already been removed from stores. The agency said there have been no injuries reported from consuming the product at this time.
