In their first Division II tournament game in school history, the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams breezed through the opening round, taking down Glenville State 88-71.
Winston-Salem State’s last nine wins have all come by a double-digit margin (9-1 overall in their last 10 games), including a 17-point margin of victory in their last four contests.
Nevaeh Farmer put on yet another strong shooting display, scoring 22 points, hitting 6-of-7 from three-point range, adding five assists and two steals.
In her last three games, Farmer has shot a combined 13-of-20 from three (missed 13 straight in the four games prior), averaging 21.7 points per game.
Maia Charles did it all for the Rams, finishing with 16 points on 50% shooting, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Makayla Waleed added 15 points, seven assists, and four steals off the bench.
This was a wire-to-wire win for Winston-Salem State, building a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest and never trailing for the remainder of the game.
Glenville State gave WSSU a battle in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to one point with 3:34 remaining.
However, the Lady Rams kept their composure, ending the period on an 11-2 run, building momentum going into the second half where they would lead by as many as 23 points.
Winston-Salem State will now advance to the second round where they will face the two-seed Gannon, who opened the tournament with a 76-61 win over Edinboro.
