Texas Southern dismisses former basketball star and athletic director following investigation

Texas Southern has decided to move on from their former athletic director and basketball star.

Kevin Granger, who has been on leave since a sexual assault lawsuit was filed against him, was officially fired as Athletic Director by TSU, according to a report from Michael Shapiro of the Houston Chronicle.

“In June 2025, Texas Southern University was formally notified of serious allegations made in a civil lawsuit against Dr. Kevin Granger, who was then serving as Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Athletic Director,” the University said in a statement released Wednesday. “Based on the seriousness of the allegations and the advice of legal counsel, the University immediately placed Dr. Granger on administrative leave status. Associated with this action, two independent administrative inquiries into this matter, fully external to the University, under Title VII and Title IX were directed.”

Letitia Quinones-Hollins, Granger’s attorney, expressed disappointment with the school’s ruling.

“He has contributed 30 years of his life to [TSU] for the betterment of that school. He has done nothing but add value to Texas Southern University, raised millions of dollars, that has never been done before, for different athletic programs there,” she told the Chronicle. “What they ultimately dismissed him for was having a private conversation with someone he thought was his friend. In that conversation, he never propositioned her, never did anything like that. So, for {TSU] to outright dismiss him for basically one text message, with someone who he considered a friend, without any alternatives, is very disappointing and disheartening.”

Texas Southern disagreed in their statement.

“Any suggestion that the University failed to act or acted without due consideration is inaccurate. Texas Southern University followed a deliberate administrative process, assessing the facts, applicable law, and policy, over several months to ensure a fair and responsible review and determination.”

Granger’s retired jersey number was removed from the rafters of HP&E Arena recently without comment from the university prior to Wednesday’s statement.

Paula Jackson, a veteran SWAC administrator has served as interim AD in Granger’s absence.
