The actress is opening up about the body-shaming among fans of the show “Bridgerton,” saying that the focus on her appearance has overshadowed the work that went into the show.
In an interview with Elle UK, Coughlan discussed the scrutiny she’s faced regarding her body while filming the show and even after it ended. She said that the focus on her appearance is “frustrating” and “surreal.”
She said that while filming the show, she was working out a lot to lose weight, but people are still referring to her as “plus-size.”
“You know what was really bizarre was, when I was shooting that series, I was exercising a lot because I knew I had to, so I had lost a bunch of weight. I was probably a size 10, and one of the corsets was a size 8,” Coughlan said. “And then people talked about how I was plus size, and I was like, ‘How f***ed are we that I am the biggest woman you want to see on screen?’”
The Irish actress, who became a world sensation playing the character Penelope Featherington on the show, said that the focus on her appearance is “really hard” to deal with when it’s always on her body. In contrast, the work that went into the show is ignored.
“It’s really hard when you work on something for months and months of your life,” Coughlan said. “You don’t see your family, you really dedicate yourself, and then it comes down to what you look like. It’s so f***ing boring.”
The actress also recalled an uncomfortable experience with a fan that showed her that the focus is always on her appearance.
“I remember this really drunk girl talking to me in a bathroom like, ‘I loved Bridgerton because of your body,’” Coughlan said. “And started talking about my body, and I was like, ‘I want to die. I hate this so much.’”
