Zara Larsson is standing up for herself after facing backlash online for a joke she made about abortion in a TikTok comment, and she’s using humor as a way to push the conversation forward about reproductive rights.
The Swedish pop star opened up about the situation in a video she posted on social media, addressing those who called her out for making a joke about abortion in a TikTok comment.
The situation began when Larsson replied to a TikTok user’s comment, who told her they got an abortion after attending one of her concerts. Larsson joked about the user having “killed the performance” and then “killed it after the performance,” and it went viral, earning backlash for the singer, who some felt made light of the situation.

The pop star, however, explained in her response video why she made the joke and how she wasn’t trying to make light of the situation, but rather make a joke about it.
“I’ve seen this comment I made on a page that said she got an abortion after the show, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I killed the performance, and then you killed it after the performance.’ Like, sorry. That’s funny. I don’t know what to say. That’s funny. Sorry if you don’t have humor.”
She explained how she wasn’t trying to fight with those who are against abortions, as she and they are “fundamentally different” when it comes to the subject, and she wanted to respond to those who support abortions and said the subject should not be joked about.
Instead, the singer explained that she wanted to pose the question of why abortion is only acceptable if emotional hardship or trauma is involved.
“I saw lots of comments like, ‘This isn’t something to joke about,’” Larsson said. “I’m very pro-choice. I’m as pro-choice as anyone, but abortion is a serious topic. I want to know why it’s okay only when it’s a hard decision.”
The singer explained that the choice to have an abortion is not acceptable unless the woman is suffering.
“Why is it only morally okay when women have to suffer?” she said. “Why can’t it just be okay for a woman to want to have an abortion for any reason?”
The singer also emphasized the need for sex education and the availability of birth control measures that could help prevent unwanted pregnancies.
“We should teach sex education to kids,” she said. “We should make sure people have access to birth control, free condoms, free whatever, because people love sex. That’s just human nature.”
The singer also explained that joking about the issue could actually help remove the stigma that is attached to abortion.
“It doesn’t have to be taboo,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be this bad thing that women do.”
The singer also mentioned cases in Texas where women have had abortions due to severe problems with the fetus.
“I’ve seen so many cases like this in Texas where women want their kids, but they’ve got to have abortions because the babies cannot live outside the womb,” Larsson said. “And they cannot, and it’s because of the law.”
Larsson concluded her speech with her renewed commitment to her support of abortion, referring to it as healthcare.
“Abortion is healthcare,” she said.

The singer, known for her hits “Lush Life” and “Symphony,” is no stranger to giving her opinion on social issues.
