Tennessee State guard Aaron Nkrumah has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, capping a remarkable rise from Division III standout to one of Division I’s most dynamic playmakers.
Nkrumah, a 6-foot-6 senior guard, averaged 18.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, leading the Tigers to a share of the OVC regular-season title — their best finish in more than three decades
Known for his explosiveness in transition and unrelenting work ethic, he became the centerpiece of a Tennessee State team that reclaimed its reputation as a contender under first-year head coach Nolan Smith.
Before arriving in Nashville, Nkrumah starred at Worcester State, a Division III school in Massachusetts, earning MASCAC Player of the Year honors.
His decision to transfer to Tennessee State in 2024 marked a bold leap of faith — one that required him to adjust to Division I speed, physicality, and expectation.
And he did, averaging 10.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game as a junior.

Nkrumah takes leap to OVC’s best
Nkrumah’s senior campaign was a highlight reel in consistency: eight games with 25-plus points, including a 32-point outburst against Morehead State in February that solidified his Player of the Year candidacy. His defensive contributions were equally vital, as he often guarded the opposing team’s top perimeter threat.
Now, he’ll aim to guide the Tigers to their first OVC Tournament championship since 1993 — and a long-awaited NCAA Tournament berth that would crown his improbable journey from Division III gyms to Division I glory.
