A 22-year-old administrative assistant is currently hospitalized at the intensive care unit of a hospital following an alleged stabbing and arson attack by a former co-worker who had made romantic advances at the victim, according to the police and the victim’s family.
The incident occurred on Monday in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, which falls within the metropolitan area of Recife, the capital city of the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil.
The victim, who has been identified as Mariele Vitória Alves de Lima, currently finds herself hospitalized at the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital da Restauração, a major public hospital located in Recife’s Derby.
According to the police, the suspect, who has been identified as José Leonardo Pereira da Silva, allegedly attacked Lima after she declined the suspect’s romantic advances.
According to the victim’s family, Lima and Pereira da Silva used to be co-workers. The suspect developed romantic feelings for the victim, which Lima failed to reciprocate. According to the victim’s sister, Lima decided to end the friendship with the suspect because he started making her uncomfortable with his actions.
According to the police, the suspect had been dismissed from the workplace approximately 30 days before the alleged attack. The suspect allegedly showed up at the workplace on Monday and confronted Lima.
According to the police, Pereira da Silva allegedly stabbed the victim. Subsequently, she set her on fire after he poured thinner, which is used for diluting paint, all over the victim’s body.
The victim was subsequently taken to the hospital for medical attention and currently finds herself hospitalized at the intensive care unit of the Hospital da Restauração. According to the victim’s family, the victim’s current medical status is considered stable, although the victim suffered a severe attack from the suspect.
It is not yet clear whether the police have arrested the suspect.
