Multi-platinum singer-songwriter and filmmaker Melanie Martinez is toning down the fame and femininity with her new single, “Disney Princess.” The song is an edgy pop anthem that calls out the commodification of women in the entertainment industry and beyond.
The song is the latest teaser for her upcoming album, “HADES,” continuing the dystopian cinematic universe that Martinez has developed throughout her career. With edgy lyrics and big production, the song rethinks the idea of selling your soul in the entertainment industry.
“I love writing about the entertainment industry and how it affects women,” Martinez said. “It’s a perfect microcosm of the world around us, how numb and disconnected you can become if you allow others to commodify you.”
Martinez first exploded in the scene in 2012 but has since developed a dedicated global fan base with her conceptual albums and richly detailed worlds. Instead of just releasing music, she releases cinematic experiences with rich character development that blends fantasy with social commentary.
With over 30 billion worldwide streams to date, 5.54 billion official YouTube views, and over 62 million followers across social media platforms, Martinez has carved out a unique space in alternative pop music. Her debut album, “Cry Baby,” went double platinum in 2015, with a slew of multi-platinum singles, including “Dollhouse,” “Pity Party,” “Play Date,” “Pacify Her,” “Carousel,” “Mad Hatter,” and “Soap.” The album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart for 208 nonconsecutive weeks.
She followed it with two more consecutive Top 3 debuts on the Billboard 200 chart with the platinum-certified “K-12” in 2019 and “Portals” in 2023. All three albums debuted at number one on the Alternative Billboard chart.
With the release of “K-12,” Martinez released a feature film based on the album. The film debuted at number six at the global box office. “K-12” further solidified Martinez’s reputation for creating an immersive experience. Martinez donated $1 from each ticket sold during the “K-12” tour to The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ youth.
With “Portals,” Martinez achieved another milestone in her illustrious career. “Portals” debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, and “VOID” and “DEATH,” the first originals from Martinez, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. Martinez is not only a talented singer, songwriter, and actress, but also an entrepreneur in the fragrance and lifestyle brand space.
Martinez released “Cry Baby,” an independent fragrance, in 2016, which was an instant success. Martinez partnered with Flower Shop Perfumes in 2023 to launch a new fragrance brand. Martinez’s fragrances rank in the top five best-sellers at independent retailer ScentBar. Martinez’s new fragrance brand includes candles, body spray, and perfume pendants.
Martinez launched the first global arena tour,” The Trilogy Tour,” in 2024, selling out venues worldwide, including two consecutive nights at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Martinez performed at Lollapalooza in Chicago and Corona Capital in Mexico City.
