‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Season 1 Finale Makes Huge Change From Source Material In Post-Credits Scene

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the hot new Game of Thrones series at HBO, brought its first season to a close on Sunday night. Season 1’s penultimate episode ended with the tragic death of Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), heir to the throne, leaving everyone at Ashford Meadow gagged in the finale, which is Episode 6. Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey) was even planning to serve Baelor after he was triumphant in the trial

Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell) is trying to figure out how to move his family forward after his son Prince Aerion Targaryen’s (Finn Bennett) actions pretty much led them to this moment (or we can argue that Egg pretending to be a squire led to this). Though his brother has died from this Trial of the Seven, Maekar has a proposition for Dunk: let Prince Aegon V “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell) be his squire…but there’s a twist.

Learn more about what Maekar asks of Dunk, as wellas the mid-credits scene.

What’s in the Season 1 post-credits scene of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’

In what’s technically a mid-credits scene, which airs right after the title card, A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms (a fun poke at Egg’s correction to Dunk), we see Maekar looking for Egg.

While this isn’t a traditional post-credits, or even a mid-credits scene…we’re just going to call it that to give it a name, it’s noteworthy. Back at Ashford Meadow, the Targaryens are leaving, but then the fact that Egg is missing, again, has come to his attention. He said, “Where the f**k is he?”

Now, just a few moments ago in the finale, we’d seen Egg approach Dunk before he took off and let him know that his father said that he needed to squire for him. Dunk, seemingly into the fact that his idea worked on Maekar, is pleased, and they hit the road. However, looks like Maekar didn’t actually approve of Egg going. As we know, Maekar wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of Egg living as a peasant, and his first offer was for Dunk to go to Targaryen’s summer retreat, Summerhall, and have Egg squire for him there.

This isn’t what happens in the novella

In the first of three (so far) Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, Maekar actually agrees with Dunk and sends Egg off with him. So the fact that he doesn’t know that Egg went off with Dunk is a deviation and change from the source material.

What does this mean? We don’t exactly know yet; maybe, though he didn’t know that Egg left, Maekar is truly fine with him and will believe this is the best plan. That could likely be the case.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is streaming in full on HBO/HBO Max. Season 2 was renewed in November of last year before the premiere of Season 1.
