Da Brat and Judy Harris-Dupart released their new book, The Way Love Goes, earlier this month, opening up about their relationship, parenthood, being moms to their son, True Legend, who was born in 2023, and the backlash they received for choosing a white man as a sperm donor.

In an exclusive interview with People, Brat and Harris-Dupart opened up about their experience and how they received hateful messages from those who criticized the couple for choosing a white donor instead of a Black one to conceive their son through in vitro fertilization.
“We received death threats, people told us things like we should miscarry,” Harris-Dupart told People.
Brat was 48 when she got pregnant and 49 when she delivered their baby in July 2023. In the months leading up to the birth of their first child, the couple told Blavity’s Shadow and Act that they preferred to have a Black male donor, but learned that their options were limited.
“Black men are not high in the sperm donor pool. It’s really only a few,” Harris-Dupart said.
“Only about 3 percent of donor sperm is from Black men,” she explained to People.

Despite the challenges they faced, the couple’s only priority was to have a healthy child. Harris-Dupart praised her wife for being a “devoted mother” and said that the rapper enjoyed every moment of her pregnancy.
The couple eventually celebrated the birth of a healthy baby, True, but their path to parenthood included a miscarriage during their initial IVF attempt.
“It broke my heart,” Brat said of the loss to People. “But I wanted to try again. Thank God I didn’t quit or give up.”

Brat said she fell in love the moment True was born: “Feels like a dream. He’s perfect in every way,” noting how she felt, “Very appreciative for such a blessing of our bundle of joy. This journey has been more amazing than we could’ve ever imagined.”
“His name had been True Legend Harris-Dupart, but now that we’ve met him, we are tempted to name him ‘Perfect,’” Brat said.
