James Van Der Beek’s co-stars on Dawson’s Creek are honoring the actor after he died on Wednesday at 48. Many of Van Der Beek’s colleagues expressed their sorrow on social media after the actor’s wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared the sad news, Today.com reported.
What did James Van Der Beek’s ‘Dawson’s Creek’ co-stars say after his death?
Busy Philipps, who played Audrey Liddell in Dawson’s Creek, is among those mourning Van Der Beek after his death. Philipps went to Instagram to share photos of her former co-star and wrote a lengthy statement, saying everybody who worked with him loved him. She also said his loved ones surrounded him as he “battled his illness.”
“My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today…every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness, especially his parents and brother and sister,” Phillips wrote. “But I am profoundly heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly and their six magical children.”
Phillips linked the family’s GoFundMe page and called Van Der Beek “one in a billion.”
“He will be forever missed and I don’t know what else to say,” she wrote. “I am just so so sad. He was my friend and i loved him and i’m so grateful for our friendship all these years.”
Chad Michael Murray, who played Charlie Todd, also expressed his grief when he commented on Instagram.
“Sending love and light to your beautiful family. James was a giant. We’re so so so sorry for what you’re going through,” Murray wrote to the actor’s family, per Today.com “His words, art and humanity inspired all of us — he inspired us to be better in all ways. God bless you guys.”
Per Page Six, Kerr Smith, who played Jack McPhee, wrote on Instagram, “I’m so grateful for being able to call James a brother. I’ll miss him deeply. Rest easy.”
Dawson’s Creek aired from 1998 to 2003 on The WB. The cast reunited for one night in New York City, but Van Der Beek was unable to attend due to stomach viruses. Still, he sent a prerecorded message to his former co-stars and fans at that time.
“From the cast to the crew to everybody who’s doing anything and has been so generous, and especially every single last one of you, you are the best fans in the world,” the actor said in his message, according to Today.com.
James Van Der Beek was battling colorectal cancer
In 2024, Van Der Beek shared that he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer: “I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” he said in an Instagram message at the time.
His wife, Kimberly, announced that her husband died “peacefully” on Wednesday morning.
“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come,” she wrote on Instagram. “For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
