Morgan State to revive one sports program, add another

Morgan State will resume offering a sport that hasn’t been on campus for generations while adding a companion program to go along with it.

Tuesday afternoon, the university announced they will be reviving their men’s golf program and adding women’s golf as a new sport.

“These programs broaden opportunities for our student-athletes, reinforce our commitment to gender equity, and strengthen our ability to compete at a high level while delivering meaningful academic and athletic experiences,” Bears athletic director Dena Freeman-Patton said in a statement.

The Morgan State men’s golf program was very successful in its heyday, winning the CIAA championship in 1967, while the opportunity to offer women’s golf was one the university wanted to take advantage of.

“The addition of men’s and women’s golf is a strategic step forward for Morgan State University as we expand opportunities for student-athletes and elevate the national profile of our athletics program,” university president David K. Wilson explained. “With golf growing among younger and more diverse participants, this investment positions Morgan to compete in an evolving sport while advancing our commitment to access, excellence, and inclusion. These programs will strengthen alumni engagement, attract high-achieving students globally, and reinforce Morgan’s leadership among HBCU Division I institutions.”

A national search for a head coach for both programs will begin immediately.
