Smith-Njigba became a household name when he played football at Rockwall High School in Rockwall, Texas. He made his biggest mark in his senior year when he caught 35 touchdowns, Seahawks Wire reported. Smith-Njigba played 44 games in his high school career and totaled 82 touchdowns.

He then attended Ohio State University and had a breakout sophomore season in which he posted a record 347 receiving yards in the Rose Bowl. Despite a hamstring injury in his final college season, Smith-Njigba still remained on the radar of NFL teams. He became the 20th overall pick in the 2023 draft, going to the Seahawks.

In the 2025 regular season, Smith-Njigba led the league with 1,793 receiving yards. He also recorded 119 receptions and 10 touchdowns, per Seahawks.com. The star wide receiver showed gratitude as he received the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year award.

“What an honor,” Smith-Njigba said when he received the award. “I want to first give all the glory to God. Second, I want to give it to my teammates. I want to thank y’all. I love y’all. Y’all are who I do it for each and every week.”

He also thanked his father for the wisdom he shared throughout his life.

“Going into my last year [of college], he told me to pray for wisdom, and I did,” he said. “Before going into that season, I wanted to be a Top 5 draft choice, I wanted to be a Heisman candidate, a bunch of things, and ultimately, I wasn’t able to play and I think with that time, I grew wise and figured out a lot about myself, and who I wanted to be and who I wanted to do it for. Ultimately dropping to the 20th draft pick where I was selected by the Seattle Seahawks, and I can’t thank everyone involved enough.”
