Tennessee State adds Super Bowl MVP Richard Dent to football staff

Tennessee State football coach Reggie Barlow has added Pro Football Hall of Famer Richard Dent to his staff as special advisor.

Dent, a TSU alumnus and Super Bowl XX MVP, starred for the Tigers from 1979-82 under coach John Merritt, earning two-time All-America honors with 39.5 sacks.

“When I took this job, I learned how rich Tennessee State football’s legacy is, and no name represents it more than Richard Dent,” Barlow said. “One goal was reconnecting our greats so players understand the standard set before them.”

Dent, the Chicago Bears’ all-time sacks leader with 137.5, joins after a 14-year NFL career highlighted by four Pro Bowls and leading the league with 17 sacks in 1985. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

In his role, Dent will focus on player mentorship, alumni engagement and program development, said TSU athletics director Mikki Allen.

“The addition brings Hall of Fame experience and leadership to elevate our student-athletes,” Allen said.
