Liam Ramos, 5, And His Father Released From ICE Detention In Texas

Liam Conejo Ramos, the 5-year-old boy who was recently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents with his father, has been released from a detention facility. Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro said he picked up Liam and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, from the Texas facility on Saturday night and took them back to their home in Minnesota.

“Liam is now home,” Castro wrote on X. “With his hat and his backpack. Thank you to everyone who demanded freedom for Liam. We won’t stop until all children and families are home.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar also celebrated the family’s return as she posed for a photo with the father and son, as well as Castro.

“Liam is home now and we are grateful to @JoaquinCastrotx for traveling to Minneapolis with him and his dad,” Omar wrote. “Welcome home Liam.”

How did Liam and his father get released from a Texas detention center?

The father and son were released after U.S. District Judge Fred Biery ordered the Trump administration to release them by Tuesday, NBC News reported.

“Observing human behavior confirms that for some among us, the perfidious lust for unbridled power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency,” Biery wrote in his order, per NBC News. “And the rule of law be damned.”

Congressional representatives checked on Liam and Arias at the Texas facility and reported on the disturbing conditions they witnessed. Castro said Liam wasn’t eating well and he has been very depressed.

Liam’s community spoke up vehemently after he was detained

Liam’s case sparked national outrage as the public widely shared a photo of the child getting detained while wearing a bunny hat as he was returning from his Minneapolis school. Many of Liam’s teachers, administrators and friends spoke up to demand justice for the 5-year-old.

Immigration agents pulled Liam and his father from their car in their driveway while the child’s mother could only watch helplessly in agony.

“This family is following US legal parameters and has an active asylum case with no order of deportation,” Zena Stenvik, superintendent of the Columbia Heights public school district, wrote in a statement, per The Guardian. “I have viewed the legal paperwork with my own eyes. Why detain a five-year-old? You cannot tell me that this child is going to be classified as a violent criminal.”
