HBCU national championship quarterback to hit transfer portal

South Carolina State quarterback Billy Atkins announced via X that he has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Atkins said he officially submitted his name to the portal on Jan. 16, though the move came later than expected due to the pending waiver process.

“The delay occurred because I am currently waiting on an eligibility extension waiver from the NCAA,” Atkins wrote. “At this moment I am unaware as to when I get a decision, but until then I will be looking for a place to play. DMs open!”

Atkins, who spent four seasons at James Madison before transferring to SC State, threw for 2,319 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions last season in guiding the Bulldogs to a MEAC championship and Celebration Bowl berth.  He was also named to the All-MEAC second team.

In the Celebration Bowl versus Prairie View, he only played in the first half before leaving the game with a shoulder injury. During the outing, Atkins went 7 of 9 for 45 yards, and he was sacked three times.

The Bulldogs were able to rally to win 40-38 in four overtime periods to capture the school’s second HBCU national championship in four seasons.

The Baltimore, Maryland native now enters an active transfer portal market seeking a fresh start while awaiting word on whether the NCAA grants him an additional year of eligibility.
