Winston-Salem State football coach Robert Massey resigns after 6 seasons

Winston-Salem State is in the market for a new head football coach following the announcement that Robert Massey has handed in his resignation, effective December 31, 2025 per HBCU Gameday.

Massey took over as head coach of the Rams in 2019 after serving in various roles with the team, including as Associate Head Coach, from 2016-2018.

In his six seasons as head coach at WSSU, he compiled a 25-34 overall record, including a 20-23 record in CIAA play.

The four-season streak with a losing record to begin his tenure marked the longest consecutive stretch for Winston-Salem State since 1976.

The 2024 season served as his best year, posting the only winning record of his tenure with a 7-3 mark. This past season, the Rams ended with a 4-6 record.

Before his time at Winston-Salem State, Massey had two previous stints as head coach at Livingstone (interim from 2005-2006), and Shaw (full-time from 2012-2015), combining a 16-44 record.

His collegiate coaching career began in 2003 as a wide receivers coach and defensive backs coach (in 2004) at his alma mater North Carolina Central.

Before embarking career in coaching, Massey had a significant career in the NFL, most notably being selected to the Pro Bowl in 1992 as a member of the Phoenix Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals).
