North Carolina Central keeps MEAC hopes alive with close win over Norfolk State

North Carolina Central prepared for their biggest game of the season by absorbing a challenge from Norfolk State.

Reserve quarterback Vinson Berry threw two fourth quarter touchdown passes for the Spartans, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles came away with a 31-28 win.

North Carolina Central improved 7-3 overall and 2-1 in MEAC play. They’ll play conference co-leader South Carolina State this Friday in a game with massive implications.

Walker Harris completed 24 of 39 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns – two to Chauncey Spikes and another to Mekhi Wall.

Norfolk State (1-9 overall, 0-3 MEAC) took an early 7-3 lead on a seven-yard touchdown run by X’Zavion Evans, but Central took the lead for good on a 33-yard pass from Harris to Wall.

Harris’ second scoring pass to Spikes opened up a 28-14 fourth quarter lead for the Eagles, but Berry, a sophomore quarterback, relieved Kuhns and threw touchdown passes to KamRyn Thomas (18 yards) and DreSean Kendrick (15 yards) to pull NSU within three points.

Norfolk State had one final possession but turned the ball over on downs and Central held the ball until the final buzzer.
