Diamond Johnson, after cut from WNBA team, signs pro basketball contract

The 2025 MEAC women’s basketball player is taking her talents to the Far East.

Diamond Johnson, who led Norfolk State to their third straight NCAA tournament appearance, has signed a deal with Hefei of the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association.

Johnson previously participated in training camp with the 2024 WNBA Finals runners-up, the Minnesota Lynx.

A transfer from North Carolina State, the Philadelphia native averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3.6 steals per game for the Spartans, who went 30-5 and won the MEAC tournament title for the third year in a row.

Several observers, including HBCU hoops expert Liv Antilla and former WNBA veteran Chasity Melvin, felt Johnson was a notable snub in the 2025 WNBA Draft. She signed a training camp contract with the Lynx, but never saw game action before being released.
