The Turkey Leg Hut in Houston’s Third Ward has officially closed after a court ruling permitted its landlord to proceed with foreclosure.
Court ruling clears the way for foreclosure and asset sale
A federal judge converted the establishment’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy to Chapter 7, paving the way for the landowner, CNPH Properties LLC, to take over the property, KHOU 11 and Click 2 Houston reported.
The court ruling also ordered all its assets to be sold to repay creditors after the restaurant faced significant financial debt.
Turkey Leg Hut owed the landlord more than $100,000, per KHOU 11.
Turkey Leg Hut faces bankruptcy, lawsuits and health violations
The latest move comes after the founders, Lynn Price and Nakia Holmes, faced a series of problems, including bankruptcy, lawsuits and more than 30 health violations deemed a public concern.
As Blavity reported, the Turkey Leg Hut had temporarily shut down in September after the Houston Health Department issued 35 health violations against the establishment, “including conditions that pose an imminent threat to public health.” Some violations stemmed from container usage, lack of pest control and floor and ventilation issues.
At the time, the Turkey Leg Hut released a statement on Instagram, vowing to make changes for those who enjoyed dining at the restaurant.
“We’re working on making your Turkey Leg Hut experience even better, so stay tuned for what’s coming next,” the restaurant stated. “Trust us, it’s worth the wait!”
Financial troubles were a factor in Turkey Leg Hut’s closure
Price and Holmes opened the Turkey Leg Hut in 2017, offering the Houston community a unique culinary experience featuring their famous stuffed turkey legs and a lively atmosphere that attracted locals and celebrities, per Click 2 Houston.
The Turkey Leg Hut’s financial issues were critical to its permanent closure. The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year after being in more than $5 million in debt.
Additionally, the restaurant had a slew of lawsuits, including a 2018 complaint against Price for allegedly not paying the rent and one in 2022 filed by Deleware-based US Foods for nearly $100,000, per Blavity.
